How to Pray for a Woman Facing an Unplanned Pregnancy

3 min read

Somewhere tonight, a woman will sit in a parked car or on the edge of her bed with a positive test in her hand. She may not have told anyone yet. She may not have prayed in years.

She may feel completely alone. But she doesn't have to not be prayed for.

At Infinite Worth, prayer isn't something we add on at the end. It's the ground our 24/7 nurse chat stands on. While our nurses answer women through the night, Prayer Warrior volunteers pray for the women on the other side of the screen and for the nurses answering them.

If you've wanted to pray for women facing unplanned pregnancies but weren't sure where to start, here is a simple place to begin. You don't need polished words. You only need to show up.

Pray for her heart

An unexpected pregnancy can bring fear, shame, and pressure all at once. Ask God to quiet the panic long enough for her to breathe and think clearly. Ask Him to remind her that she has worth that no circumstance can take away."The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

Pray for the first voice she hears

The first conversation often shapes what happens next. Pray that whoever she reaches first, whether it's a nurse, a friend, or a stranger at a center's front desk, meets her with truth and tenderness, accurate information, and no judgment.

Pray for the nurses on the line

Our nurses carry heavy conversations, often late at night. Pray for clarity, compassion, and strength, and for wisdom to know what she needs to hear and what she simply needs someone to hear.

Pray for the handoff

A chat is only the beginning. Pray that she takes the next step and walks through the doors of a local pregnancy resource center, and that the care she started with carries on there. We call that continuity of care, and it's worth praying for by name.

Pray for the people around her

Pray for the baby's father, for her parents, and for her friends. Ask God to give them courage, patience, and loving responses, so the people closest to her become a source of support instead of pressure.

Pray for her baby

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb." (Psalm 139:13)Pray for the little life being knit together right now, and for a future full of hope.

Pray for the pregnancy centers in your community

Directors, nurses, client advocates, and volunteers pour themselves out week after week. Pray for rest, unity, and open doors. Pray for the client who will walk in tomorrow and the one who hasn't called yet.If you lead a pregnancy center, feel free to share these prayer points with your staff, your board, or the churches that stand with you.

A short prayer you can pray tonight

Father, You see her even when no one else does. Wrap her in Your peace tonight. Guide the first person she reaches out to, and give them words full of truth and love. Strengthen the nurses who answer in the dark, and the centers who welcome her in the morning. Protect the life You are forming, and let her know she is never alone. In Jesus' name, amen.

Want to pray alongside our nurses?

If this stirred something in you, there's a place for you here. Our Prayer Warrior volunteers serve from home, praying in real time for women and nurses during active chats. Through our Champion for Life prayer network, you can also be connected with a nurse to pray for and hear how God is moving.

You can learn more and sign up on our volunteer page.

And if you lead a pregnancy center and want after-hours nurse support that hands women back to your team, we'd love to talk. Learn more about what we do.

The verses are quoted from the NIV.
